A Rare Pleasure

I’ve spent twenty years in live entertainment. Ten of them at Red Bull, where I ran marketing for New York and built the arts and music programs that made the brand credible in culture rather than adjacent to it. Then VP of Global Marketing at Insomniac, across a festival portfolio at scale. Now I do it independently, for two or three clients at a time.

The work has covered most of what a marketing function has to do—brand and positioning, go-to-market and campaign, paid and CRM, content and PR, partnerships and sponsorship, and the budgets and infrastructure underneath it all. Some of it I’ve built from nothing. Most of it I’ve fixed at least once.

Where I’m most useful is the intersection of three things: getting the brand right, getting the executive team aligned behind it, and building a team that can actually execute it. Those tend to be the parts that stall, and they’re difficult to fix from outside the room.

So the first few weeks are mostly listening: what the team already knows and hasn’t been asked, and what everyone’s been thinking but hasn’t said. That’s normally where the real answer is.

The rest is unglamorous. A standing weekly with whoever owns the work, a short written summary every month so nobody has to guess where things stand, specific briefs, and honest feedback. Teams that trust each other move faster than teams that don’t. That’s not a philosophy; it’s a scheduling advantage.

I’d rather leave behind a team that’s better than when I arrived than a campaign nobody can repeat.
